Colas Rail UK is proud to announce the award of further major infrastructure schemes through our longstanding position as Principal Contractor on the Midland Metro Alliance (MMA).

These awards secure a robust pipeline of high-quality work on the West Midlands Metro’s growing network through to 2028 and reinforces the MMA’s reputation for safe, timely, and budget-conscious delivery. As well as the trust of our client West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) to efficiently deliver complex light rail projects.

The awarded schemes are:

Birmingham Eastside Extension – Phase 2

  • Builds on the successful delivery of Phase 1 to an interim terminus at Millenium Point.
  • Interfaces directly with the High Speed 2 Curzon Street Station.
  • Supports future development of Birmingham’s Sports Quarter and potential Metro links to the airport, unlocking regeneration in Digbeth and the surrounding area.

Wednesbury to Brierley Hill Metro Extension – Phase 2

  • Phase 1 of the scheme is currently the largest light rail project in the UK, with Phase 2 continuing the route from Dudley to Merry Hill shopping centre and includes complex civil engineering works, such a new viaduct and sensitive remediation of historic infrastructure including the award-winning restoration of the Brunelian Parkhead Viaduct.
  • A catalyst for regeneration across the West Midland’s Black Country region by connecting underserved communities and unlocking land for housing and business growth.

We will also be increasing the stabling capacity at the existing Wednesbury depot to meet the demand of the growing fleet including internal modifications to the Operational Maintenance Control building and a new Control Room.

These schemes advance regional transport connectivity within the West Midlands whilst embedding meaningful social value as part of the delivery. From apprenticeships to school engagement programmes, Colas Rail with our Alliance partners, continue to support the West Midlands Combined Authority by investing in the local communities ensuring that the benefits of infrastructure delivery extend far beyond the Light Rail systems themselves leaving a lasting legacy.

Speaking on this contract award, Colas Rail Urban Managing Director, Iain Anderson said “These awards ensure continuity of work through to 2028 – a significant endorsement of our dedicated, highly skilled, and passionate team. We look forward to continuing this journey, driving forward the successful delivery of projects that will continue to positively shape the lives and the futures of the people of the West Midlands.”
